Dawson Cornwell included in The Times Best Law Firms 2024 list

Once again we have been recognised in this prestigious list to find the best lawyers for business, public and private-client law from the top 250 legal practices in England and Wales plus Scotland’s top 20.

Each of the firms in the list has been chosen by lawyers in other law firms and we have been commended for our work in family law.

Some of our high-profile work that has been selected for praise includes: acting in a landmark matrimonial law matter about disputes over money between divorcing spouses when one of them dies and in which were granted a “leapfrog” appeal, allowing our client to bypass the Court of Appeal and go directly to the Supreme Court; our case representing the husband in one of the most important cases on prenuptial agreements in the past decade, in which the High Court reinforced the position that courts should take account of such agreements provided that they are not completely unreasonable or signed under duress; and our case representing a mother in wardship proceedings who had been stranded in Pakistan by her child’s father, who had stolen her travel documents and returned to England with the child. She successfully challenged the Home Office’s policy arguing that it was discriminatory against foreign spouses who were stranded abroad to be unable to claim the domestic violence concession to secure their immigration status.

Senior Associate, Shabina Begum’s role in helping to draft the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act, which protects young children from being subjected to child marriage, was also highlighted.
