{"id":4920,"date":"2026-04-09T11:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dawsoncornwell.com\/?p=4920"},"modified":"2026-04-09T11:47:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:47:14","slug":"associate-spotlight-sacha-lee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dawsoncornwell.com\/ur\/insights\/associate-spotlight-sacha-lee\/","title":{"rendered":"Associate Spotlight: Sacha Lee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our Associate Spotlight turns the focus to the brilliant Associates at Dawson Cornwell.&nbsp; Here we highlight the breadth and depth of experience in the firm, as well as the wide range of personalities and interests that make us who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dawsoncornwell.com\/ur\/the-team\/sacha-lee\/\">Sacha Lee<\/a>, a senior associate in the Children Department who qualified in 2021, shares her thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What type of work do you undertake at Dawson Cornwell?<\/strong><br>I specialise in any legal issue relating to a child (in private and public law, including internationally). This includes helping parents reach arrangements for their children after separation, international contact, international relocation of children, international child abduction (Hague and non-Hague), inherent jurisdiction cases (including Wardship and where we act for the applicant child), FGM cases, recognition and enforcement of foreign orders, domestic abuse cases, cases involving very serious allegations, addiction, care proceedings, adoptions (and adoption breakdown), and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did you want to get into law, and what led you to family law?<\/strong><br>I always wanted a career where the impact of my work makes difficult situations better for others. I care deeply about creating positive impact and supporting people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m also interested in understanding what makes us who we are. Connecting with people is a genuine privilege. Sharing our different perspectives and experiences offers insight into why we think and act as we do. Understanding breaks down barriers, fosters trust, and strengthens relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was also keen to work in an academically stimulating field as I thrive on challenge. I am also a lifelong bookworm!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family law immediately appealed to me. I started my training in matrimonial finance, which I enjoyed. However, when I did my second rotation in children law, I knew this was what I wanted to do and have done it ever since. For me, no other career blends the above elements as well as children law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What has been your biggest career challenge?<\/strong><br>The early years of a legal career are a period of intense learning and self-discovery. You are finding your place in a competitive industry while exploring and defining your own professional identity. At the same time, you are learning to manage responsibilities, absorb a huge breadth and depth of legal knowledge, and develop practical skills. For me, this also involved balancing a full-time training contract with part-time study, which added another layer to my experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, these challenges are the training for the essential skills needed for this career. They build and consolidate perseverance and resilience, trust in your team, confidence in your work and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collaboration is the cornerstone of family law. I have been fortunate to work in exceptionally supportive teams, where my colleagues are deeply committed both to their work and to one another, and alongside outstanding Counsel and other dedicated professionals who bring passion and expertise to every case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And your biggest success?<\/strong><br>I am grateful to have enjoyed many cases where a client got the outcome they needed and deserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, my most recent success is particularly memorable for me personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This client would not have been able to access legal advice but for the fortunate availability of legal aid to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of three and a half years and despite innumerable challenges, late night urgent statements, multiple applications, and distilling years of subtle and all-pervading abuse into evidence for the court &#8211; initially at Fact-Finding and then at Final Hearing &#8211; we secured findings of serious and unusual coercive and controlling behaviour and an order that genuinely gives long-lasting and stable protection for my client and their child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The positive impact of this final order on my client\u2019s day-to-day life is life-changing for them. It also made me feel quite emotional!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What do you think is the biggest issue facing family law at the moment?<\/strong><br>I am deeply concerned about the ongoing cuts to legal aid. We have also just experienced months long disruption owing to the hack of the Legal Aid Agency. Despite law firms and barristers alike being subjected to months of uncertainty and risk of insolvency, there was minimal media coverage and recovery is challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early specialist advice to clients is essential so that they have as many choices as possible available to them. It is also important to consider out of court dispute resolution options wherever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public deserves to be able to take quality and early legal advice when issues arise. They should not have to either bankrupt themselves or simply go without because they cannot afford private advice but are above the very low threshold for legal aid (if it is even available for their type of proceedings).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access to justice is critical. Accordingly, I undertake a mixture of privately paid practice, legally aided work, and some pro bono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do you have any advice for people looking at a career in family law?<\/strong><br>Family law thrives on passion and dedication. I think that it is more of a vocation than a \u2018job\u2019. Clients look to us for help in their most stressful moments. It is a privilege to be given that trust. However, that also comes with heavy responsibility, both in workload and emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We navigate a precarious balance of intellectual challenge and real, raw human emotions to guide our clients, strategise with them, and find ways forward. It is a lot of hard work and sometimes there are lows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the highs are second to none because you feel that you have genuinely helped someone and achieved a positive change in their life for them. Those are golden moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you unwind after work?<\/strong><br>Variety is the spice of life and I enjoy the following: doing an exercise class (spin or pump!) or going for a run, having fun with friends and family by exploring new restaurants or going to a show, cuddling my Ragdoll cat, doing sewing projects, playing my violin in an orchestra, or just relaxing on the sofa in front of the TV!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What book are you enjoying at the moment?<\/strong><br>I am very late to the party on this but I thoroughly enjoyed reading \u2018White Teeth\u2019 by Zadie Smith recently.
