Carolina Marín Pedreño and Mónica Fourmentel attend the annual conference of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 18th to 20th September 2013. Carolina Marín Pedreño leads the Hague symposium talking about principles of The Hague 1980. She gave a second presentation within The Hague Symposium about Hague Convention 1980 proceedings in England and Wales.

Safeguarding Children Conference

September 2013

Anne-Marie Hutchinson OBE and Shabina Begum took part in a conference on safeguarding children run by the Muslim Institute. The conference was aimed at engaging and opening up discussions amongst the Muslim communities on issues of child safeguarding and in effect surfacing some of the "unspoken" problems, covering issues of child neglect and child sexual exploitation.

Alternative Parenting Show 2013

Dawson Cornwell were delighted to be the headline legal partner in this year's Alternative Parenting Show which took place in the Connaught Rooms near Covent Garden on 21 September 2013. As has become the norm this year's show featured many exhibitors and a series of talks and seminars. FMA Conference and Gala Dinner

June 2013

The Family Mediators Association held its Gala Dinner and Conference on 25 and 26 June 3013 respectively. In her speech after the dinner guest of honour Cherie Booth QC paid tribute to the contribution made by John Cornwell to the founding of the association and to family law generally.

Lisa Parkinson delivered the inaugural John Cornwell Memorial Lecture on the morning of the conference at John's request she described him as "..a trail-blazer in the evolution of family law from a litigious approach to a settlement-seeking one, in court and out of court".


Family judicial cooperation

Landmark decision in Supreme Court – Prest v Petrodel

The Supreme Court handed down its judgment this morning, putting an end to a divorce case lasting over five years. The case involves Michael Prest, an oil tycoon said to be worth at least £37.5 million, and his ex-wife, Yasmin Prest.

Sailing success

Lisette Dupré took part in the Manches Cup Lawyers Sailing Regatta racing for the Bar Yacht Club. She helped crew as part of a team of four who had never sailed together before. They took part in three races and won them all.

Resolution has paid tribute to its founder John Cornwell by launching a new annual award in his memory to be awarded each year at their conference to the member nominated for making an outstanding contribution in the field of family law. Dawson Cornwell were delighted that the first award was posthumously made to John Cornwell and accepted by his wife Claire Veillard. Resolution conference

April 2013

Resolution, the organisation for family lawyers founded by John Cornwell, held its 25th annual conference in Stratford upon Avon on 11-13 April 2013. Lucy Marks, Kate Allenand Stephen Harker from Dawson Cornwell were in attendance. During her speech at the gala dinner on Friday night the Chair of Resolution Liz Edwards announced a new annual award for a solicitor who has demonstrated outstanding work in support of separating families. John Cornwell was named as first recipient and the award was collected in his memory by his wife Claire Veillard who also attended the dinner.

John Cornwell

March 2013

John Cornwell, our senior partner and one of the founding partners of the firm, died on 22 February 2013 after being ill for some time. All of us at Dawson Cornwell were hugely saddened by this awful news and the office will not be the same without him. His funeral took place at Christ Church Spitalfields on 6 March 2013 and was attended by in excess of 400 people. A number of obituaries have been published.

Third annual Peter Clark prize

January 2013

On 16 January 2013 Tania Afrin, winner of the third annual Peter Clark Prize, was presented with the £2,000 award at Dawson Cornwell’s offices.

This award was established in honour of Peter Clark, a partner at Dawson Cornwell from 1993 until his death in April 2010. Managing partner Stephen Harker said: "In providing a young aspiring family lawyer with this award and the internship at Dawson Cornwell we hope to help them along the road to qualification and remember Peter Clark our partner whose contribution to the field of family law was immense."
